Your first semesters at Harvard present an opportunity for creative exploration. As you embark on your academic journey, you should feel free to pursue long-standing fields of interest and to explore diverse new disciplines. If you’re considering concentrating in East Asian Studies, don’t hesitate to reach out to the ADUS for First and Second Year Students! The ADUS-F/S is a PhD candidate in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations who will be happy to help you get a clearer idea of the wide variety of classes included under the EAS umbrella, potential career paths, and numerous opportunities for on-the-ground experience in East Asia through summer programs, study abroad, and internships. The ADUSes will be your allies on the journey towards finding the right concentration, as well as on the path to fulfilling your requirements.

Choosing a concentration usually begins with a casual conversation between you and the ADUS. Most students declare partway through their third semester (October of Sophomore Fall). This ensures you have ample time to fulfill  course requirements, while leaving room to explore additional or complementary academic interests. As an interdisciplinary concentration, EAS offers diverse approaches to humanistic inquiry into East Asian societies. We recognize the value of unique study paths as sources of creative energy: your journey through the concentration will be yours to chart, with support from faculty and advising staff to help optimize your course of study for your specific interests and goals. That’s why your ADUS (and the rest of the advising team) is particularly excited to meet and help you thrive in EAS!
